Now there are 10.

TravelPulse Canada was on hand in New York City yesterday, as Viking held a naming ceremony for its 10th identical ocean ship. The Viking Saturn was named by Anne Ziff, a well-known philanthropist and Chairman of the Metropolitan Opera, a long-time Viking cultural partner.

Classified as ‘small ships,’ Viking's ocean vessels each have a gross tonnage of 47,800 tons, with 465 all-veranda staterooms that can house 930 guests. The ships all feature a warm and welcoming Scandinavian design, light-filled public spaces and a wide choice of indoor and al fresco dining options.

The Viking Saturn naming ceremony took place during Viking's 25th-anniversary year and follows the company's most successful single month of bookings in its history in January.

Now boasting 100 vessels in its collection of river, ocean and expedition ships, Viking has welcomed 17 new ships to its fleet since 2020. The company has been honoured with many awards in recent years, including accolades as both #1 Ocean Line and #1 River Line by Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler – marking the first time ever that one company simultaneously earned #1 in its categories from both publications.

TravelPulse Canada enjoyed a tour of the ship with Richard Riviere, founder of Rottel Studio and the man who created the distinct look and feel of Viking's river and ocean ships. Check back next week for a story based on that illuminating tour.

Participants in the Viking Saturn naming ceremony also heard a one-hour presentation from Viking founder and chairman Torstein Hagen, where he described his fascinating rags to riches to rags – and back to riches – career. We’ll have a full story next week on that presentation too, along with impressions from a night spent on the Saturn.
