Mystery surrounds the discovery of a church candle holder in an empty field in Limerick city.

A Garda investigation is now underway following the discovery of a church candle holder in an empty field in Limerick city.

The gold-embossed stand-alone votive stand is traditionally used by church goers to light candles to get their prayers answered.

The candle stand along with its collection box were discovered by a local Limerick resident yesterday in a vacant site just off the Pa Healy Road in the city.

The location of the discovery is a close to the Canal Bank area, popular route for walkers and commuters in the city.

The Limerick Diocesan Office were contacted and the origin of the discovery has yet to be determined.

Gardai in Henry Street Garda Station visited the location of the find and have since seized the candle stand which is now undergoing a forensic examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
